My Music

Hi! First blog post. Really cool! I’m Rylei! I’m a native to Jacksonville, Florida, but have grown up in Spartanburg (and around Converse!) for the majority of my life.

I have a very strong relationship with music, and I get really excited when I get to share my taste with other folks. I’ve been playing cello for about eight years now, to give me some music taste credibility. I like, really like talking about my music taste. I actually like it so much, that I keep an updated Topster of all of my favorite albums (pictured below.)

1. Recent Favorites

Recently, I’ve really been on a metal kick. I grew up listening to heavier stuff like Rage Against the Machine and Limp Bizkit, and have recently dabbled in bands similar to them. I found myself a few months ago landing on Slipknot, and have been listening to Slipknot every single day since. I have really found myself connecting with “Gently” off of their album Iowa, not because I can relate to the trauma that it is based off of, but because I really love the tension and suspension that’s built up through the song.

If you find yourself truly bumping to this song, “Eyeless” and “Lech” are also my top Slipknot favs. Explicit language warning, though.

 2. Music With Some Personal Meaning

As previously stated, music has always been something that I really enjoyed. My music taste now can be credited to the music my parents showed me growing up (they made me cool.) With that being said, a song that has deep meaning to me is “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana. It may be the most basic and well known grunge rock song out there, but it got me into music! After my dad showed it to me for the first time, I listened to it on repeat for hours and hours every day for what had to be two weeks. My entire music taste, which is a HUGE part of me, was founded on this song.

3. Music I Can’t Seem to Enjoy
While I would describe myself as someone with an extremely diverse taste in music, it is easy for me to find music that I really don’t vibe with. I try to listen to all music with an open mind, and I really really try to understand the art behind it. That being said, I really just cannot find myself enjoying EDM. Some people are super passionate about it and that’s really really cool! I just can’t do it.

 4. Honorable Mentions!
If you’re someone who really enjoys classical music or wants to learn to enjoy classical music, this is my favorite composition. Dmitri Shostakovich only produced banger tracks during his time, with all of his works being politically motivated by Stalin’s dictatorship. I got the pleasure to play an arranged version of this piece while in the eighth grade, and I absolutely fell in love. Funny enough, I have seen this piece on a Spotify playlist titled “Classical Music for Metalheads.” I also highly recommend.

  1. Hi Rylei! Can I just say, you playing the cello is awesome and I'm super jealous that I never got to learn how to play an instrument before. Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana is one of my favorite songs to ever exist. As for EDM, I have a love-hate relationship with it. I could listen to it in a club or party, but that's about it. It's not one of my favorite genres either!

  2. I think that it's super cool you play the cello. I played strings for one year and then I switched to brass in high school and that's what I finished with. I played a piece by Shostakovich my sophomore year of high school and it was so fun because of how technically challenging it was.

  3. I actually think playing instruments takes a lot of skill and dedication and you play the cello is impressive. The song smells like teen spirit literally everyone knows it and if you don't your a chump so thank you for knowing it. I cannot vibe with the EDM just like you.

  4. Hey Rylei! It's fascinating to me that you played the cello. I've always wanted to learn how to play an instrument. I also completely agree with you on not being able to connect to EDM. I can't quite put my finger on what it is I don't care for about it, but I've never been able to get into it.

  5. I love your music taste so much. The hard rock, alternative grunge vibe is so much fun to listen to. I don't mind EDM but I can understand why someone might not like it. I've found beat in the back can sometimes get repetitive and boring instead of what it's supposed be which is inciting and intense.
